Brazil

A well construction course was held in 2005.

Bolivia

  • Since 1980 Development of EMAS technology by the German development aid worker Wolfgang Buchner, first pilot tests.

  • 1991 - 1996 Various well construction courses, partly financed with German development aid funds, individual courses were also held later.

  • Distribution of the EMAS concept via radio and educational television

  • Cooperation with the University of La Paz

  • Establishment of a well construction school (Puerto Pérez/Lake Titicaca), international well construction courses repeated there between 2005 and 2015

  • Almost 100 well builders were trained on 15 courses. These have drilled around 40,000 wells to date.

Guatemala

In 2004, a well construction course was held here with the support of the EU.

El Salvador

In 2004, two EMAS courses were held here with the support of the EU; the main focus was on the construction of latrines.

Honduras

A total of five courses have been held here from 1997 to the present, some of them supported by the EU. Approximately 1,000 wells have been constructed here.

Nicaragua

A total of six well construction courses took place here from 1999 to 2022, partly supported by the EU. Almost 1,000 wells have been drilled here.

Ecuador

In 1998 there was a course here in cooperation with the Pan American Health Organization (OPS) of the WHO.

Colombia

In 2017 and 2023, two EMAS projects took place here, including irrigation of a small town.

Peru

From 1998 to 2002, several well construction courses were held here, partly supported by the EU. Several well builders are still active today, and more than 20,000 wells have been constructed.

Paraguay

In 2002, a well construction course was held with the support of the EU.

Sri Lanka

Due to the tsunami disaster in 2004, several operations took place in the area of Batticaloa and Kalmunai between 2006 and 2011, in cooperation with the City of Munich and the EU.

Sierra Leone

  • The first EMAS courses were held here in 2011 and 2012.

  • Since 2013, EMAS has been involved in a large, long-term project here together with Welthungerhilfe:

  • Establishing its own well construction school in Crossing (near the capital Freetown)

  • Establishment of the social business WASAP

  • Construction of several thousand wells and toilets to date, including on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

Liberia

Here, individual self-employed well builders are active who were trained during EMAS courses in Sierra Leone. Almost 1,000 wells have been constructed in this way.

Senegal

Several EMAS courses have been held since 2019, including one in 2022 together with our Spanish sister organization TADEH.

Guinea-Bissau

An EMAS well builder training course was held here in 2018.

Mali

EMAS training courses were held in 2008 and 2018.

Cameroon

There was an EMAS project in 2006.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

An EMAS well construction course was held in 2007.

Eritrea

An EMAS training project took place here in 2005.

Zambia

EMAS has been active here since 2019, in collaboration with SMART Centers (www.smartcentregroup.com).

Malawi

EMAS courses have been held here since 2021, in collaboration with SMART Centres.

Kenya

Since 2022 there is a cooperation with TADEH, the SMART-Centres  and Aquaclara. 

Tanzania

 An EMAS well construction course was held here in 2023.

EMAS - active in over 20 countries since 1990

In his adopted country of Bolivia, the German development worker Wolfgang Buchner developed the EMAS technology in the 1980s and carried out his first pilot tests.

In 1991 he started a series of larger EMAS projects in Bolivia, followed by various projects in Central and South America around the turn of the millennium.

After the turn of the millennium, EMAS was then active several times in Africa.

From 2006, several operations took place in Sri Lanka after the tsunami catastrophe.

Since 2013, EMAS has focused its activities on various countries in West and East Africa.

In most cases, the projects were and are carried out in cooperation with local or global project partners.

A total of around 70 well construction courses have taken place since 1991. It is estimated that more than 100 of the trained well builders are currently still active. To date, you have built more than 70,000 wells and thousands of cisterns/latrines etc. worldwide.

In this way, more than 500,000 people have been supplied with drinking water so far.
